Is Your Store Showing Up in ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google Gemini? Here’s What You Need to Know

TL;DR: Shopify has rolled out a feature called Agentic Storefronts that lets AI platforms like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot discover and sell your products. If you’re already on Shopify, it’s active by default for eligible stores, but you need to know where to check and how to optimize your listings so AI actually recommends you over your competitors. And if you’re not on Shopify? There’s now a free Shopify plan specifically designed to get your products into AI channels without requiring a full platform migration.

The way people shop is changing fast. Instead of Googling “best protein powder for women” and clicking through ten browser tabs, more and more shoppers are just asking their AI assistant. And that AI is answering back with real product recommendations.

This is a massive opportunity, and Shopify has already done a lot of the heavy lifting to position your store for it. But there’s a catch. If your product listings aren’t in great shape, the AI won’t recommend you. It’ll recommend your competitor.

Let’s walk through exactly what’s happening, how to make sure you’re set up, and what you can do right now to actually show up.

What Are Agentic Storefronts, and Why Should You Care?

Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts are essentially a direct pipeline between your product catalog and the AI tools your customers are already using every day, including ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot. When a customer asks one of these tools for a product recommendation, Shopify can surface your products right inside the conversation.

Even cooler, for some of these platforms, customers can complete their purchase without ever leaving the chat. It’s a full checkout experience built right into the AI conversation, powered by Shopify.

For ChatGPT specifically, customers get sent to your store’s checkout in a browser window. For platforms like Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, Shopify’s built-in checkout can handle the full transaction right inside the AI interface.

And just like any other order on your store, you keep full ownership of the customer relationship and the post-purchase experience. Orders show up in your Shopify admin with channel attribution so you can track exactly where they came from.

Who Is This For? (More People Than You’d Think)

Here’s something a lot of people don’t realize: you don’t have to be running a full Shopify online store to take advantage of this.

Shopify recently launched a free plan called the Agentic Plan that’s specifically designed for businesses who want to get their products into AI shopping channels without needing to migrate their entire store to Shopify.

This is a really big deal for brands that are currently running on legacy platforms, custom-built sites, WooCommerce, or other setups. Instead of rebuilding your whole store, you can plug into Shopify’s Catalog and get your products in front of AI shoppers for free. You only pay Shopify Payments or third-party transaction fees when a customer actually completes a purchase.

The Agentic Plan also lets you sell on other Shopify channels like Shop, and there’s an enterprise tier available for larger businesses that need things like additional inventory locations, carrier-calculated shipping, and higher API rate limits.

If you’re already on a standard Shopify plan, this doesn’t change anything for you because your store is already eligible. But if you have clients or colleagues on other platforms who’ve been wondering how to get into AI commerce without a full migration, the Agentic Plan is the answer.

Step 1: Check That Your Store Is Opted In

Here’s where a lot of Shopify merchants get confused. Agentic Storefronts are active by default for eligible stores, but not every store is eligible yet, and the rollout is still happening in phases.

Here’s where things currently stand: the ChatGPT agentic storefront is available to eligible stores now, Google AI Mode/Gemini and Microsoft Copilot are in early access and aren’t yet available to everyone, and you’ll get an email and an in-admin notification from Shopify when new agentic storefronts become available to your store.

To verify your settings and manage access, log into your Shopify admin, go to Settings in the bottom left, click Sales Channels, and look for the agentic storefront channels listed there. This is where you can see which ones are active and manage your permissions for each. You can also control whether checkout is enabled for each channel right from that same settings area.

One thing worth knowing: even if you opt out of the checkout experience on a particular channel, your products can still show up in that AI’s recommendations. Customers just get redirected to your regular store to finish the purchase, so opting out of the checkout doesn’t make you invisible to AI results.

Step 2: Understand How Your Products Are Being Discovered

Your products get syndicated to AI channels through something called Shopify Catalog, a behind-the-scenes feed that shares your product data including titles, descriptions, images, pricing, and availability in a structured format that AI agents can actually parse and understand.

Shopify Catalog updates continuously, so pricing and inventory stay accurate across every AI channel automatically. That’s one less thing to worry about.

But here’s the thing: AI platforms aren’t just doing a keyword match. They’re trying to understand what your product is, who it’s for, and how well it fits what a customer is asking. That means the quality of your product data matters a lot.

Step 3: Optimize Your Listings So AI Actually Recommends You

This is where most Shopify merchants have real room to improve, and honestly, it’s the most important thing you can do right now. Think of this as the new SEO. Instead of optimizing for a search engine crawler, you’re optimizing for an AI that’s going to read your product page and decide whether to recommend it to a real customer with a real need.

Here’s what the AI platforms are evaluating:

Product Title — Be descriptive and specific. “Vanilla Dream” tells an AI nothing. “Vanilla Whey Protein Isolate Powder, 25g Protein, 30 Servings” tells it everything it needs to make a match. Write your titles the way a customer would search for the product out loud.

Product Description — This is your biggest optimization lever. Write descriptions that are thorough, accurate, and genuinely helpful. Cover what the product is, who it’s for, how it’s used, what makes it different, and answer the questions a customer might ask an AI assistant. Don’t be sparse here. The more context the AI has, the better it can match your product to the right searches.

Images — High-quality, accurate product photos matter even in AI discovery. Don’t skip this.

Product Organization — Fill out your product Type, Vendor, and Collections fields. Use Tags strategically. Don’t leave these blank. These fields help AI platforms understand how to categorize your product and when to surface it.

Barcodes (ISBN, UPC, GTIN) — If you have them, use them. They help AI platforms precisely identify your product and cross-reference it with other data sources.

Variants — Make sure your variants like size, flavor, color, and count are named clearly. Sloppy variant naming is an easy way to get passed over when a customer asks for something specific.

Step 4: Don’t Overlook Your Store Policies and FAQ

Here’s something most brands skip, and it’s a real missed opportunity.

When a customer is chatting with ChatGPT or Gemini and asks “What’s this brand’s return policy?” or “Do they ship internationally?”, the AI is going to look for that answer. Shopify pulls from your store policies to answer those questions in real time inside the AI conversation.

If your policies are incomplete, outdated, or missing, that’s a bad experience and it can cost you the sale.

Go through your return, shipping, and privacy policies and make sure they’re current and complete. Consider installing the Shopify Knowledge Base app, which lets you review and customize the FAQs that AI platforms use when answering questions about your store. You can even create your own custom Q&As to highlight what makes your brand unique, like your sourcing story, your guarantee, or your key differentiators. This takes maybe an afternoon to do well and can meaningfully improve how the AI represents your brand in a customer conversation.

The Bottom Line

AI commerce isn’t coming, it’s here. And Shopify has done more than almost any other platform to make sure its merchants are positioned to take advantage of it. But being eligible isn’t the same as being optimized.

The brands that will win in AI search are the ones who treat their product listings like the marketing asset they are, with specific titles, detailed descriptions, complete organization, and store policies that actually answer customer questions. This is the new SEO, and the brands who get ahead of it now are going to have a real edge as AI shopping becomes the norm, especially since most of your competitors haven’t touched this yet.
